There are definite similarities to "The Dreamer" in this book, and while I found that to be the better book that should not be held against it. I can't believe I've never heard of Charlotte Parkhurst before this book. Her story is extremely fascinating and the stuff great movies and tall tales are made of. That bodes well for this book, which mixes fact and fiction together into a delicious, reader-friendly concoction. Ryan's writing isn't as gorgeous as it was in "The Dreamer," but it is still quite good and suits the story well. All in all, a very good book, proof that Pam Munoz Ryan is a great author (even though I haven't read most of her other stuff yet...)
